When you find your brother, he is a prisoner of Asera and through some trickery you free him, but not without injuring him. After you earn your freedom by defusing the immediate threat, Blameless Marad asks you to look into Asera's plans as you search for your brother, who apparently has also gone after Asera. It turns out an Oseram named Asera is at the bottom of it, and has been placing/sending machine lures strategically to attack Carja settlements.

The gist of the story is that you're playing as a Shadow Carja named Ryas who played a role in the kidnapping of Prince Itamen (under order from your father, thinking you were bringing him to safety), and who needs to earn his freedom from Blameless Marad by getting to the bottom of some machine attacks on the Carja settlement Dawn's Grasp. I haven't seen a really good synopsis anywhere.
